Reflecting on Three Significant Feasts in May

Back to news

Three significant Church feast days are approaching in succession: the Ascension, Pentecost Sunday and Trinity Sunday. These feasts invite us to celebrate the transformative power of loss (the Ascension), unity and community (Pentecost) diversity and relationality (Trinity).

Veronica Lawson, an Australian Mercy Sister, in writing on each of these feasts offers us the following insights on which we might reflect:

13 May 2018. Feast of the Ascension Year B (Mark 16:15-20)
‘The feast of the Ascension invites us to face the universal experience of the loss of a loved one, and to face it in a transformative way…’

20 May 2018. Pentecost Sunday Year B (John 20:19-23)
‘As we celebrate Pentecost Sunday, let us gather into our hearts all the distressed members of our Earth community and pray, “Come Holy Spirit, renew the face of the Earth…”’

27 May 2018. Trinity Sunday Year B (Matt 28:16-20)
‘Trinity Sunday celebrates the core Christian conviction that God is a communion of relational love…’

As we each prepare this week for the coming of these feasts, a short retreat is available online that provides an opportunity ‘ to discern the promptings of the Holy Spirit in our own lives, and open ourselves more fully to the spirit of Pentecost.’
