Obituary:

Sr. Winifride (Susan) Barrett was born in Lough, Doolin, Ennis, Co. Clare on 21st June 1916.  She entered  St. John of God Novitiate, Wexford on 3rd October 1949, made her First Profession on 25th August 1952 and her Final Profession on 25th August 1955.

Having completed her Nursing Training at Wexford General Hospital, Winifride ministered in St. John’s Hospital for many years.  She also ministered in Aut Even Hospital, the Irish College in Rome, New Ross District Hospital and St. Kieran’s College, Kilkenny.  She retired to St. John of God Convent, Newtown, Wexford in 1991 and remained there until her death on 18th May 2010.  “Winnie”, as she was affectionately known to her Sisters in community, had many lovable qualities.  She was essentially a kind and gentle person and those entrusted to her care and her Sisters in community experienced these qualities in abundance.  Above all she was a woman of deep faith and prayer.

Susan, as she was known to her family, was daughter of the late Ellen and Peter Barrett.  She was predeceased by her parents, her sisters, Sr. Helen Thomas, O.P., Sr. Immaculata, Mercy Convent, Templemore, Mary Anne, Margaret, Bridie, Lena, Teresa and Nora, by her brothers John, Thomas and Jim.  She is survived by her brother, P.J. who lives in USA and by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins and many friends.  She was very close to her family and had a special place in her heart for her neighbours and friends in her beloved Doolin.

Her funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr. Jim Finn, assisted by Fr. Jim Fegan; also in attendance were Fr. Pat Sinnott and Fr. Hugh Byrne.  Following her Requiem Mass, she was laid to rest in the Convent Cemetery, Newtown Road, Wexford.  We give thanks to God for her life of love and we pray that she now enjoys the peace of eternal life with the God she loved and served so well.
