Sr. Veronica Mary Newport R.I.P.

Sr. Veronica Mary passed away peacefully at Sallyville House, Wexford 28th January 2018 at the venerable age of 97 years.

Veronica was born on 13th July 1920 in Pludboher, Tomhaggard, Co. Wexford.  Her parents were James and Kathie (nee Sinnott).  She was fourth eldest in a family of thirteen.  Her mother died when Veronica was just 13 years old.

She is survived by her brother Richie, two brothers-in-law, many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, her extended family and many friends.

Veronica entered St. John of God Novitiate on the 21st November 1936.  On reception into the Congregation she received the name Marcus, but she reverted to her own name following Vatican II.  She made her First Profession on the 30th June 1940 and her Final Profession on the 30th June 1943.

Veronica’s main ministry was in catering.  She ministered in many of our Convents and Hospitals including Haughton Hospital, New Ross, Kilkenny Convent, Courtney Hill, Newry, Edenderry, Cahercalla and John’s Hill Convent in Waterford.  She finally retired to Wexford Convent in 1992.

In an interview with South-East Radio in 2010, when asked what was her happiest memory looking back on 74 years as a Sister, she had no hesitation in saying it was the advent of Charismatic Renewal.  “That changed my whole life, in that I was always happy, I had the spirit of prayer and I was able to keep close to God at all times”.  It was her life in the Holy Spirit and constant prayer that kept her happy and fulfilled.  She participated in many prayer groups in the Wexford area and even in places further afield such as Emmanuel House of Providence in Clonfert, Co. Galway.

Her Requiem Mass was celebrated in St. Mary’s Church, Kilmore, Co. Wexford.  The Bishop of Ferns Denis Brennan presided and the Chief Celebrant was Fr. Jim Finn of Crossabeg, assisted by Fr. Billy Swan and Fr. Billy Caulfield.  Burial took place in Kilmore Cemetery.  Veronica, we thank God for all you gave so generously throughout your life and pray that you now enjoy the fullness of life with God.
