Obituary:

Sr. Monica Sinnott R.I.P.

Monica died peacefully in the loving care of the Sisters, Staff and family at Sallyville House on 7th April 2025.  She was born in Wexford on 03.05.1932 to James and Mary Sinnott (nee Cullen). Sister of Catherine (Kitty Comber), Robert (Bobby), Anne Marie (Nancy) O’Leary, Elizabeth (Elsie) Myler, Marie Sharkey, Nicholas, James and John. Monica is sadly missed by her brother John and Sister-in-Law Anne, her nieces and nephews, grandnieces and nephews, greatgrand nieces and nephews extended family, friends and her St. John of God Community.

Monica attended her local St. John of God School, the Faythe and always regarded herself as a proud “Faythe Girl”. She entered the St. John of God Novitiate 8th March 1950, made her First Profession 05.11.1952 and Final Profession 05.11.1955.   She qualified as a primary teacher in Maria Assumpta Training College, London and taught in the Catholic school Trowbridge, Wiltshire, England. Later she qualified in University College Cardiff and taught in St. Augustin’s Secondary school, Trowbridge.

Monica was appointed Provincial in Ireland from 1984 – 1990. Following this she volunteered for our Cameroon mission and taught French and Religion in Our Lady of Lourdes Secondary School Bamenda from 1991 – 1994. She then moved to Beni Dang where she ministered as Pastoral Sister from 1994 -2002.

She returned to Trowbridge where she ministered in a pastoral capacity in the parish from 2002 – 2014. She was delighted to get the opportunity to renew friendships with former colleagues during this time in Trowbridge.  She finally returned to St. John of God Community, Wexford, where she enjoyed the companionship of all the sisters especially the retired “English” Sisters who faithfully supported her until her death 7th April 2025.

Monica was a committed Sister of St. John of God giving herself totally to every task and role she took on. She was prayerful and loved learning and sharing her knowledge and skills with her students and with anyone who needed help. She was a very kind, compassionate and helpful person. She was very proud of being a Sister of St. John of God and always wanted the best for the Congregation. She enjoyed being a member of a community, listening to music, watching some of her favourite programmes on TV, keeping fit, walking and being out in the fresh air. She remained active until a very short time before she was called to her final home.

While reposing in Sallyville House Chapel her family, friends, staff and sisters paid their respects and shared stories and many memories of her days in leadership, teaching, community and especially her final years in Sallyville.  As family friends, staff and community gathered her wake concluded with Evening Prayer.

Monica’s funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr. Jim Curtis, Sallyville House Chaplain, followed by her burial in the Convent Cemetery, Newtown Road.

May Monica rest in peace for her God
