Sr. Michaeli Walsh R.I.P.

Sr. Michaeli (Catherine Lauretta) Walsh was born in Cloghogue, Castlebaldwin, Co. Sligo on 25th March 1921.  She entered St. John of God Novitiate, Ballinamore, Kiltimagh, Co. Mayo on 7th January 1943.  She made First Profession on 22nd March 1946 and made  Final Profession on 22nd March 1949.

Michaeli ministered in Subiaco in Australia, Ely Hospital, Wexford General Hospital, Torquay, Haughton Hospital in New Ross and Cahercalla in Ennis.  She retired to Wexford Convent in 1996.

Michaeli was one of a family of six – three sisters and two brothers.  She was pre-deceased by her parents, Catherine and John, by her sisters, Margaret and Sr. Carmelita SSJG, and her brothers, Michael and Sean.  She is survived by her sister, Bridie, a patient at Bailey’s Nursing Home, Collooney, Co. Sligo; also her niece, Mary, nephews, Gerard, John and Michael, and her many grandnieces and grandnephews.

Michaeli had many lovable qualities; she was a very kind, gentle person and endeared herself to everyone she met.  She was very close to her family.  A very special place was kept in her heart for her niece, Mary, and three nephews; also her grandnieces and grandnephews and of course her beloved Sligo.

After a long illness bravely borne, Michaeli died peacefully on 23rd February 2011.  She had been gently cared for by the Community and staff at Wexford Convent and will be greatly missed by them.

Her funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr. Jim Finn and assisted by Mgr. Lory Kehoe.  The congregation joined in singing one of her favourite hymns, Lady of Knock.  Following her requiem, she was laid to rest in the Convent Cemetery, Newtown Road, Wexford.
