Sr. Immaculata Hurley R.I.P.

Sr. Immaculata (Mary Anne) Hurley, born on 28th May 1925, a native of Kilmacow, Co. Kilkenny was called to the fullness of life on 2nd June 2009.  She had entered St. John of God Novitiate Wexford in 1957 and made Final Profession on 10th May 1963.

Immaculata qualified as a nurse and later trained in Theatre and Midwifery.  She nursed in many of our Nursing Homes and hospitals, including Ely, Aut Even, Maypark and in Cahercalla from 1978 up until her retirement from nursing.

Following her retirement she made a generous contribution in Cahercalla, through her work, in the Accounts Department.  She was also Sacristan in the hospital where altar linen and everything related to that area was perfectly kept!

In 2007 she moved from Cahercalla to St. John of God Community, The Cloisters, John’s Hill, Waterford.  It was there that she celebrated her 84th birthday shortly before her death.

Immaculata endeared herself to all with whom she lived and ministered and was affectionately known as ‘Mac’.  She loved her family dearly and was proud of her roots and was a keen supporter of her native county hurlers.  She also had a keen interest in the Irish political scene!

She combined work, play and prayer very beautifully. She is remembered by all who knew her, as a gentle, kind-hearted, wise and dependable woman who had a wry sense of humour.   She bore failing health with faith filled patient endurance.

Following a brief period in the Regional Hospital Ardkeen, Waterford, she died peacefully there. She is survived by her sister Bessie, nephews and nieces, and by a very dear cousin Mary McDonald and is mourned by all who knew her.

Following Requiem Mass, her remains were interred in her family grave, in her native parish of Kilmacow.

We commend a true and faithful Sister to her God of love and to the company of all the Blessed.   Ar dheis De go raibh a hanam dhilis.
