Obituary:

Sr. Gerard Forrestal R.I.P.

Sr. Gerard Forrestal was born in Cooleeney, Moyne, Thurles, Co Tipperary on 12 October 1925.  She was christened Ann (Nancy).  Her parents were Bridget (Delaney) and Michael Forrestal.

Sr Gerard entered St John of God Novitiate, Wexford on 14 January 1950.  She made her First Profession on 22 August 1952 and her Final Profession on 25 August 1955.

Gerard ministered in Parkton, Edenderry and Ely Hospital before being appointed to Kilmore Road, Dublin in 1973 where she remained until 1986.  During her 13 years there she was much appreciated by the Sisters.  She was a splendid cook and a great homemaker.  She also enjoyed shopping for the community at the Northside shopping centre and was affectionately known as ‘the little nun’.  She made many loyal friends while in Dublin and was renowned for her hospitality.

Following her time in Kilmore Road, Gerard spent 3 years in the Irish College, Rome.  In 1989 she came to St John of God Convent, Kilkenny.  She spent 17 years as Sacristan at St Patrick’s Church where she maintained a high standard in all aspects of that ministry.

Despite her-busy life, Gerard had many other interests including knitting and sewing and viewing the EWTN religious channel.  Her love of GAA was evident particularly when the Blue and Gold of Tipperary were on display.

On 19 July 2012 Gerard celebrated her Diamond Jubilee surrounded by the community and close friends.  After the celebration she spent some time visiting her family and friends.  On her return to the Convent the sudden deterioration in her health came as a shock to all.  She was confined to bed and was lovingly cared for by the Sisters and carers and was visited frequently by family members.  During the short time left to her, Gerard bore her pain with great fortitude.  The depth of her spirituality, her love of the Eucharist and her great devotion to Our Lady carried her through the suffering.

Gerard died peacefully on 24 September 2012.  Following her Requiem Mass concelebrated at St. Patrick’s Church, Kilkenny she was laid to rest in Foulkstown Cemetery.

We thank God for all she has given so generously throughout her life and pray that she now enjoys the fullness of life with God.
