Obituary:

Sr. Eva Mary Devereux R.I.P.

Sr. Eva Mary was born in Wrington, Bristol on 22nd May, 1935.  She was the eldest of six children of Daniel and Doris Devereux.

Having completed her education through the local Primary and Secondary Schools, she was employed as a Grocery Assistant with Bristol Co-Operative Society.

Then at the age of seventeen she began her training as an Orthopeadic Nurse and this was followed by her General Training at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.

Prior to entering Religious Life Eva spent some time as an Army Nurse caring for post-war veterans in Aldershot and Berlin.  She also nursed in Manor Park Hospital in Fishponds where she first encountered the Sisters of St. John of God.

Eva entered St. John of God Novitate, Wexford 27th June 1966.  She made her First Profession 7th April, 1969 and her Final Profession 22nd August, 1974.  She then went on to do Midwifery training and following that she nursed for many years in Ireland and England before branching into Parish Ministry in Torquay and London.

In 2004 Eva retired to St. John of God Convent, Newtown Road, Wexford and for a number of years enjoyed her trips back to England to visit family and friends.  In later years her health deteriorated and she missed those visits.

Eva was a woman of strong beliefs and conviction.  She enjoyed quiz programmes and a game of scrabble.  She was an avid reader and had a unique sense of humour. For the past few years her twice weekly visits to Waterford for dialysis caused her much discomfort and suffering but she soldiered on bravely until the Lord called her home to Himself on April 18th, 2016.

Following her Requiem Mass in the Convent Chapel, she was laid to rest in the Convent Cemetery.

May she rest in the fullness of God’s love and peace.
