Obituary:

Sr. Eileen Lennon R.I.P.

Sr. Eileen (Ellen Teresa) Lennon was born in Newtown, Borris, Co. Carlow on 19th August, 1926.  She was one of 13 children of James and Margaret Lennon.  She is survived by her brothers Matt, Fr. Jim, Kathleen and Anne.  She was pre-deceased by her sisters Hannah, Mary SSJG, baby sister Kitty, Fr. Joe and Tom.

Having completed her secondary education at St. Leo’s Mercy Convent School, Carlow, Eileen entered St. John of God Novitiate, Wexford on 6th January 1945.  She made her First Profession on 24th September, 1947 and Final Profession on 24th August, 1950.

Eileen trained as a Primary Teacher in Carysfort.  She taught in many of our primary schools, including Kilkenny, Owning, Edenderry and Kilmore Road, Dublin.  She was a dedicated teacher and her innate sense of humour and ready wit endeared her not only to her pupils but also her teaching colleagues and her Sisters in community.  She was always sensitive and kind towards pupils with learning difficulties.

Following her retirement from teaching in 1998, Eileen became involved in administration in Kilkenny Convent 1988 – 1997 and later in John’s Hill, Waterford where she remained until 2003.  Eileen was always aware of the materially poor during her days in the classroom and in her retirement she became a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society where she continued to minister to the needy in the locality.

In 2003, due to failing health Eileen moved to Wexford Convent.  Her prayerfulness, kindness and sense of humour, qualities which pervaded her life, were evident to the end.  She died peacefully on 30th August, 2009 in Wexford Convent.

Following Requiem Mass at St. Patrick’s Church, Kilkenny, Eileen was interred in Foulkstown Cemetery.  May her gentle soul rest in peace.
