Sr. Carmelita Geoghan R.I.P.

Sr. Carmelita Geoghegan was born in Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary on 23rd May 1922.  She was christened Mary Philomena (Maureen).  Her parents were Elizabeth and Thomas Geoghegan.  She was predeceased by her sisters Nancy and Ina, her brothers Louis and Brendan.

Sr Carmelita entered St John of God Novitiate, Wexford on 15th August 1941.  She had four grand-aunts in the SJG Order, Srs Visitation, Martina, John and Aloysius Keating.  Sr Visitation was the first Superior General of the Order and Aloysius, who went to Australia as a postulant, served as Superior of the Congregational houses in Australia in the years leading up to amalgamation and was Provincial Leader from 1944 – 47 .

Carmelita made her First Profession on 3rd October, 1944, and her Final Profession on 8thSeptember, 1947.  On completion of her training as a nurse in Mercy Hospital, Cork, Carmelita ministered in many of our hospitals including County Hospital, Wexford; Ely Nursing Home; Torquay; St Columba’s, Thomastown; Maypark Nursing Home; Gorey District Hospital and County Hospital, Naas.  She retired to Wexford Convent in 1987 where she continued to play an active role.

In recent years Carmelita experienced the weakness of old age but was patient, gentle and always grateful for the many kindnesses shown her by the Sisters and carers in community.

Carmelita passed away peacefully on 24th January 2013 surrounded by members of her family and community.  Her funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr Jim Finn at St John of God Chapel.  She was laid to rest in the Convent Cemetery. May her gentle soul rest in that place where there is no more sorrow but life eternal with God.
