Since 1895 the Sisters in Australia have provided excellent healthcare facilities across the continent of Australia. In 1989, the Sisters established the St John of God Health Care System, where all of their facilities were brought together under a central management structure. In 2004, recognizing that their ongoing ability to govern St John of God Health Care was finite, the Sisters established St John of God Australia Limited to ensure, as far as possible, that their health care ministry would thrive into the future. This ministry continues today under a committed lay leadership and St John of God Health Care is now one of the largest Catholic providers of health care services in Australia.
In Australia the Congregation operates through its civil legal entities – SSJG Ministries Inc and the Sisters of St John of God Trust.
The principal activities of the civil legal entities includes supporting the temporal aspects of the Sister’s lives, conducting ministries and acting as the trustee of the Sisters of St John of God Trust.
The canonical authority is responsible for the leadership necessary to ensure the faith basis of the organisation is reflected in all its activities and complies with canon law, whereas the Management Committee is responsible for directing, controlling and overseeing their affairs.

Our Ministry Initiatives Advisory Committee (MIAC) comprises 5 members with wide ranging expertise. They provide independent advice to our Management Committee to assist them in making decisions relating to which third party charitable organisations might be considered for funding. To be considered, projects must be consistent with the focus areas determined by the Sisters some years ago, these are: “The alleviation of homelessness, particularly through the provision of assistance to vulnerable women and children at risk of homelessness, refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants”.

As the Congregation continues on its journey to completion and the eventual winding up of the Congregation in both Regions, the Leadership Team continues to give consideration to the future of our own ministries.
The Broome Heritage and Archives Centre is another ministry of which the Sisters are incredibly proud. We are eternally grateful for the wonderful contribution of our many volunteers who have brought the stories told in the Heritage Centre to life for several thousands of visitors who have been inspired by the story of the Sisters and their involvement with the people of the Kimberley.
Our Retreat and Conference Centre, nestled on five acres of landscaped gardens located directly opposite the ocean, was first established in 1958 as a holiday home for our Sisters, and so holds a special place in our hearts.
The Centre is an extremely popular and welcoming venue which caters for a variety of activities including retreats, conferences, faith enrichment programmes, professional development workshops, strategic planning sessions, and many more.
