Pakistan
The Sisters of St. John of God went to Pakistan in 1980 at the invitation of Bishop Armando Trindade of the Diocese of Lahore.
The first four Sisters who volunteered for the mission came from the Province of St. Therese in Australia. Their first ministry was to care for those suffering from tuberculosis in Bethania Hospital in Sialkot, approximately two hundred miles from the border of Afghanistan.
Very soon young Pakistani women showed interest in the way of life and work of the Sisters and requested to join them. They were welcomed by the Sisters who then introduced them to a process of spiritual and professional development in preparation for ministry to their own people.
Twenty-five years on these Sisters are involved in a wide range of services including primary and adult education, a Health Centre and extensive village outreach programmes, ministries to women and inter-faith dialogue.
