Province of St. Therese, Australia

Eight Sisters went to Australia from Ireland in 1895 at the invitation of Bishop Gibney of Perth. On arrival in West Australia they immediately set about nursing sick people in their homes around Perth and shortly afterwards they established their first hospital in Subiaco, a few miles outside the city.

Two years after their arrival some of the Sisters moved to the mining areas of Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie to nurse the miners who were suffering from typhoid fever.

In 1907 eight Sisters volunteered to work with the Aboriginal People of the Kimberley Region in the North of Western Australia. Today the Sisters continue to companion the Aboriginal People sharing their joys and sorrows as they have done for many generations.

Since their arrival in Australia in 1895 the Sisters have offered a wide range of healthcare and educational services to the people of West Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and New Zealand.

Today they are involved in counselling, spiritual direction, work with refugees and asylum seekers and a wide variety of pastoral ministries in what is now a multi-cultural, multi-faith society.

They also continue to support and mentor their colleagues in St. John of God Health Care and share with them responsibility for governance of these institutions.

A Retreat and Conference Centre at Safety Bay provides a place of rest, renewal and spiritual nourishment. Space for relaxation, prayer and solitude is offered at Mornington in Victoria.

In 1980 the Sisters in Australia responded to an invitation to go to Pakistan where they began the ministry of healthcare and education.
